We've had a very busy schedule lately and I haven't made any new promises to eat at home for a week so Brent, my friend Melissa and I headed to Shady Grove for dinner. It wasn't as busy as I expected for a Friday night but it was pretty cold outside and I think maybe people just were bundling up in their homes. Anyways, we had great company and dinner was pretty good. Shady Grove is one of those places that is perfect when you are craving some tasty fries smothered in cheese and jalapenos but after a glutinous holiday I decided to stick with a salad and veggie chili. Besides, I knew we were headed for coffee after dinner and thought I might snag a dessert. I am always in search of the best bloody mary in town and I've had a few good ones but I'm still looking. Shady Grove's was spicy and okay but there was nothing to make it really stand out. So far, the best bloody mary I've ever had was in Vegas, but maybe that was because it was at like 8 am and was my first drink of the weekend. After dinner we walked next door to Austin Java. I'm always a fan of their coffee and they have pretty desserts. The carrot cake was ok but not fabulous. There was something about the icing, I think I just wanted it to be creamcheesier... hm, I like that word! Cream-cheesier, yeah. Anywho, I personally think they have pretty good cake slices but the trick is letting the cake get to room temperature before devouring as it brings the icing to a nicer texture and the whole cake just tastes better that way, just my opinion. Absolutely the best part of the evening was at Austin Java. After we all settled in with our beverages he began to give Melissa dating tips, as if he's been on the market recently (we've been together for three years and married since April 09). I sat quietly as he put her through the ringer and pretended to be on a date with her. By the time our coffee cups were empty they had been on two dates and he had taken her to New York City for shopping and to see the Broadway show Rent. Needless to say, if Brent is ever widowed I worry about his game and getting back out on the market. He makes a lot of strange facial expressions and eye brow raises but at least he knows that a way to a girls "heart" is a shopping spree and a long weekend in the style capital of the US.
