Hodgepodge of events in one night: McCormick and Schmick's, Rob Zombie, Derek Mears, Roger Huerta11/10/2009 Texas caught Drum, yum. We hardly eat at McCormick and Shmick's anymore but we decided to eat there tonight. When you join their little frequent diner club, which Brent did more when he entertained clients, you always get a nice present for your birthday which is a buy-one-get-one-free entree purchase. We've been avoiding using it for quite some time since I won't eat their steaks and Brent thinks it's a waste to go there and have a veggie plate. Duh, I never really thought about the fact that they serve local fish from Texas. So thankfully I was able to order a yummy fish dish and we were all happy. I had blackened drum from Freeport, TX with Texas lump crab. It could have been a little spicier for my taste but it was flavorful and the mashed potatoes and asparagus were perfectly prepared. We had a cute, bubbly server named Rachel who was delightful. After dinner I felt I had to make a quick personality change from the quiet dining at McCormick's to the hard-rocking, I'm-a-little-scared-people-are-going-to-know-I'm-a-poser Rob Zombie concert. I didn't really know what to expect. Yeah, I know a few Rob Zombie songs but I am by no means a fan. But Brent got the tickets for $10.50 each through 101X and so I didn't mind giving them some of my precious time. It was an interesting show with interesting people watching and Rob was clearly disappointed that this was "the smallest show they have ever played for in a very long time". I just don't think Austin is their type of crowd. Anyways, it was cheaper than a movie and I got to see a few famous people because we were out. Brent recognized Derek Mears at the concert almost immediately. Once he pointed him out and told me who he was I recognized him from the premier of the most recent Friday the 13th movie we had gone to; Derek was Jason Voorheese. I remember really liking him during the Q&A as he was funny and such but I was still nervous to ask him for a picture. Of course, I waited until he walked away and then I stalked him a little and asked him for his picture. He was so amazingly gracious and kind, not to mention that when he shook my hand his hands were as soft as a baby's butt... no lie. I was so excited when I went back to Brent with my prized photo! While at the concert we ran into some friends we hadn't seen in a while. After the concert we decided to head over to J. Black's for a nightcap so we could visit with Sam and Heather. So Brent and I scooted over and as we began walking up the side walk I saw him, Roger "el matador" Huerta. I have been lusting after this guy for a good 3 years or so. Unless you are a fan of UFC you wouldn't know who he is. Believe it or not I love UFC but that post is for another time. Anyways, even if you are a fan of UFC you might still not know who he is but I have loved him and I've been hoping to run into him for quite some time since I learned he moved to Austin. I know we are smiling and look like smiling happy people in this picture but the truth of the matter is this was a very disappointing interaction for me. (sigh) I write this with a moderately heavy heart and have been thinking about it for days. When I went up to Roger he seemed dazed and confused from the moment I introduced myself. He wasn't mean but he wasn't nearly as gracious as my pal Derek Mears who is a much bigger deal than Roger Huerta, in my opinion. Roger agreed to let me take a picture but didn't seem overly happy about it. Brent came up and introduced himself as one of the owners at J Blacks and Roger changed. He talked to Brent the entire time and clearly gave two craps about me. I mean, I didn't expect him to make out with me or anything but I don't know, something better than schmoozing with my husband. Ok, so he's handsome, I really liked that he talked about a charity he runs for an orphanage in Mexico, but overall it was a let down.
Maybe my expectations were too high, that happens. Maybe he was having an off day, ok I get that. But in my heart, I think he was just kind of a chump and I'm disappointed. So here are my lessons from this busy day: McCormick's: even though you are a big chain, I can enjoy your meals. Zombie: thanks for the cheap date, it was nice to see you, good bye and good luck. Derek: your massive presence will never speak to your kind demeanor and soft hands and you have reminded me looks can be deceiving. Huerta: your gorgeous features and blah interaction also reminded me, looks can be deceiving.
