Green living isn't always easy (sigh). One of the bigger difficulties is grocery shopping. Though we sometimes use Austin Car Share, I'm stubborn and want to do it on my own. So today, I went to the grocery store for the second day in a row to finish up my shopping. I got some great fruits and veggies at Central Market on Lamar and was uber pleased at my selections and merrily checked out and went on my way.
As I returned to the scooter with my cart and began stuffing my backpack, I realized I had too many items. As I looked through my groceries I tried to decide what to sacrifice... strawberries, no, bananas, nooo, juice, oh fa-get-about-it; I'll make this work! So, I jammed my backpack and placed the two juices I bought on the outside of my backpack in the bungee cords.
I am happily riding down Lamar when I hear, SNAP. "Umm, that didn't sound good," I thought. At the next stop light I reached back and felt both of my juices precariously dangling by tiny threads of existence. I saw a little drive just a few feet ahead. When the light turned green, I cautiously rode forward and escaped from traffic. Whew! I parked the scooter and began to stand when, kaPOW. The juice flew out of the backpack, the screw-on lid popped off and catapulted halfway across the parking lot breaking the seal. I was amazed the bottle didn't crack and stopped the juice hemorrhage quickly by putting the bottle upright. How lucky for me that I always carry my camera, for documentation.
Now, recently, due to my overly ambitious shopping, I have learned a new technique I would like to share. It hasn't been ingrained in my habits yet, so this is as much a reminder for me. One can place items between your feet, safely, on the scooter and still drive around. As seen below.
Overall, most of the juice was saved and it was just another interesting story to share with Brent. I always love seeing his head shake back and forth when I share a new "adventure" with him.
So, to all: Safe Scootering and Safe Shopping and remember, don't cry over spilled orange juice (even when it's your favorite with extra pulp)!
