Brent and I threw a great Halloween party this year! He has taught me to enjoy this fun and quirky holiday. I never really celebrated Halloween before I met Brent and I really enjoy it now; it is one time of year when people can be silly, creative, and/or sexy depending on how they feel and not be judged.. for the most part.
This year was a special year for us because when we got engaged there was a period of time when we were planning to have a Halloween wedding. So, last year on November 1st when all the decorations went on sale we went with Sara and Amber on a rampage around Austin scooping up all the best Halloween goodies we could find!

Brent and I went to the Scare for a Cure haunted house last night. It is really a cool event because they raise money for people affected by cancer and in 2008 they raised $10,000 for their efforts. I'm all about a good cause but was very nervous about this haunted house. I went to my first haunted house a few years ago and screamed around every corner. I learned that if you are a screamer, they really go after you! I was even so scared at one point that this monstrosity of a ghoul came after me and I tripped over their props and fell trying desperately to get out the door! It was admittedly ridiculous but I never wanted to do it again.
The Scare for a Cure has three different "levels" of scare and we, of course, upgraded to the highest level red. This meant we had to prepare to get "bloodied" and it was full contact, meaning they could touch us but we couldn't touch them. I wasn't particularly happy about this but when we booked the tickets I felt I at least owed this to Brent since he suffers all the time with the difficulty I cause in our eating out (sigh). The pictures are from the order I got today from my local produce and farmstead basket. It is all so beautiful!
Greenling has a great referral program and if you start ordering from them be sure to write and ask them about it! They made a coupon for me and new customers can use this code and get a 10% discount on their first order: LAULAN201. Also, here's a cool fact about Greenling: Each day their trucks carry up to 100 deliveries in each one and they use 86% less fuel than the customers from that day going to the grocery stores themselves! (Fact obtained from an email I received from Jessica Evans at Greenling.) That is some serious carbon footprint reduction. So, not only are you eating healthy, fresh, sustainable food but you further helping the environment... and it's so simple you feel like your doing something selfish, but really you aren't. I love it! I'm so anxious to get my second order from them today! I'll be sure to post what I get in my mystery local produce and farmstead box. So last night we went to a networking event put on by the Young Executives of Austin. This was the second event we have gone to with this group and I it was a blast! It was held at the The Kabaret Room (old part of Speakeasy) with a performance by Mandy Lauderdale.
The Kabaret Room was a pretty cool set up. I can't remember how the old Speakeasy was but the couches and intimacy of the area is really nice. One thing I love about networking events is that it gives me the opportunity to go to bars I might not normally frequent. How exciting! Brent and I had our first official meeting with Marc Katz yesterday and I am so enthused to be handling his social media campaign. I can hardly believe it. It's going to be a big job and it's exciting, overwhelming, and going to be oh-so-fun. Look for updates regarding his activities and the movement with his campaign on Facebook and Twitter. I imagine I'll make a special page for him on my site since it is going to take up a lot of my time.
I have to say that I in seeing Marc around town and while I served as a Manager at Eddie V's I always thought he was quite a character. I wasn't really sure what I was going to think of him as an official in public office. Will our future Lieutenant Governor be seen on tv with catchy phrases like "Katz's Never Kloses"? Will the "Pastrami King's" boisterous personality convey well for a public official? I know very little about politics and I wasn't sure if this pair would compliment each other like pastrami and rye. We received our first Greenling grocery delivery this week. It was beautiful! I've really struggled with the cost effectiveness if this and think I've decided that this might be worth it for us. It isn't that much more expensive than the grocery store and I have the ability to choose local options if they are available! Besides, since we don't have a car we have to rent a one to go for bulk buying so I think this is actually going to work out to be a little cheaper. It's super simple and I loved that my first delivery came with a nice handwritten note thanking me for ordering; it was a really nice personal touch. Tonight we were invited to our friend's place at the AMLI on second street. On our walk over we were pleasantly greeted with the Viva la Vida Fest sponsored by the Mexic-Arte Museum. We didn't go to all of the festivities but it was a pretty cool site! I can't believe we have never strolled through there before; I see it every year but never think to go check it out. They had all kinds of food and music and some really cool/creepy face painting for the kids.
Hi everyone! I haven't forgotten about my blog and I just wanted you all to know I hope to catch up on this week tonight! I have some great Vita-Mix stories, a pumpkin carving night to share and a little blog about our first big Eye Caddie tournament yesterday with Young Men's Business League. It's been a busy busy week and I hope everyone has had a good one.
My wonderful friend Nicole had a few ladies over for some pumpkin carving and dinner. I love Halloween! I haven't carved a pumpkin since college and I have to say I was pretty excited. Thankfully V had the foresight to think about a Pumpkin Ale and with the beautiful orange caps I could hardly wait to pop one open and get my pumpkin carving skills on! Nicole made a fabulous dinner, which I don't mean to offend by putting at the bottom of the blog, but I thought it would be more dramatic to start with 3 chics, 3 knives, and some serious pumpkin gouging. The day began with an early morning smoothie. You can see the recipe here. It was awesome! I love vegetables and I love fruit, but if someone had told me yesterday that I would love a smoothie with spinach and strawberries together, I would have thought they were crazy. I am so impressed with how the Vita-Mix is able to really break up the spinach and make everything so creamy and smooth.
So, the day was off to a good and healthy start and with such a fabulous Vita-Mix beginning, nothing could get me down.... right? |
