1. Spot bat 2. (not pictured) Run screaming with your husband behind the kitchen counter and stare. 3. Follow his first suggestion to 'Get the camera!'

4. Gather wits and place box over bat.

5. Bravely, despite what everyone thinks of your general lack of overall fearlessness, place something firm on the underside of the box.

5. Shriek with the bat, you ARE both terrified.

6. OMG his little bat paw is trying to escape. Simply paralyzing.
7. Carry bat, box, and firm bottom covering outside and attempt to free bat.
8. Hold homeless man's dog while said homeless man explains the physics of how bats can only fly when falling from something tall. Hmm, never thought of that.
9. Watch as homeless man propels bat into the air and feel a moment of hope for small urban creatures.
10. Watch bat splat on 5th street and go inside and shed another tear. Man, what an emotional night.

Did you bury the poor bat? That, too, would be very emotional....hold a wake, visitation hours, etc. That would be the most humane thing to do.

No we didn't. :( There are so many signs in Austin saying not to handle "downed" bats that I didn't think we should push our luck. Most bats here have rabies and this one definitely didn't seem to be feeling well. Poor thing.

Yep, poor "rabid" thing! Thanks to the homeless man for attempting to help the little thing fly away and, ultimately met its doom, 'splat' on the street.

OMG! I would have shrieked the whole time, too!
