Pickled beets with goat cheese, chives, and candied pecans. Catering source, unknown but it was delish.
Last week I had my first opportunity to attend the annual Umlauf Sculpture Garden Party. It was beautiful. I had actually never even been to the Umlauf Sculpture Garden before and I can't believe I've waited this long to go. After attending this event I can completely see the draw in holding your wedding there. The backdrop, during this time of year, is a lush green garden with a delightfully gurgling stream running through to a beautiful pond. Pepper in a few statues and an amazing, romantic setting is complete. In regards to the party, it is often compared to La Dolce Vita. I've attended both now and I have to say that the Umlauf event is my new favorite. La Dolce Vita, though a highly regarded event, is just a little too busy and the Garden Party was a bit more intimate, which I truly enjoyed. Both are truly lovely though. Now, on to the nibbles....

I struggle when I have not-so-nice things to say about places as I try to keep this a positive blog. But... I always say that if something is bad enough I'll let people know. Brent and I attempted to eat at Snack Bar the other night and it was a colossal fail.  Granted we were expecting slow service based on all the yelp reviews we've read but I have to say it was a bit worse than what I expected.

Gerber Daisies for Baby G's shower! (I bought them but the G correlation was unintentional. Does this mean I subconsciously smart? Hmm, maybe.)
My day started late, and once it started it didn't stop!  Family "G" is having a baby and a delightful baby shower was held at Blue Dahlia. (I've talked about Blue Dahlia before here and here.)  This was a perfect setting for a small gathering and we sat in the back courtyard. I enjoyed that the shower was intimate enough that it gave me a chance to meet new people and catch up with friends I hadn't seen in a while. There was only one activity and it was really cute. We all painted on onesies for the baby and it was a great way for some to let out there creative juices. My onesie resulted in nothing but a big, green, G. Perfect for my caliber of painting talent (another unintentional G correlation on my part G for green, I'm a subconscious g-g-genius I tell you!)

Birthday dinner #1
Well, due to bad weather and flight cancellations, Brent and I did not make it to NYC for my birthday weekend. By an amazing act from a higher power, we were refunded for both my non-refundable plane ticket and our seemingly non-refundable Broadway tickets to go see Wicked.
While I was initially disappointed, I think it all worked out for the best given the yucky weather in New York and my Texas girl inability to really deal with 20 degree weather.
All that being said.. the picture below shows how my weekend started and how Brent more than salvaged the weekend!

Qunioa burrito: Quinoa, beans, avocado, cashew cheese, organic spinach, tomato, and sprouts all wrapped in a jumbo whole wheat tortilla.
Last week I had the opportunity to go to a conference in San Antonio and had the delight to visit Green Vegetarian Restaurant. This blog is going to be short as I'm going to let the pictures of the food speak for itself and well, I'm not feeling that great today so don't feel my descriptive verbiage flowing.
The food was fresh, healthy, and reasonably priced and I was so glad for the recommendation from my new friend, Ahsan. Green isn't far from the Riverwalk, where I was staying, and it was a nice change of pace from the myriad of unhealthy and expensive choices on the touristy Riverwalk.

Mile 18 and look at the confident, beaming smile!
My friend Lupe ran the Austin ATT marathon this year. I'm just so unbelievably proud of her and the fact that she trained for this on her own and did so great! The most I have ever run is a half marathon and Lupe's great accomplishment has inspired me, once again, to attempt the feat. Did you know that less than 1 percent of the population completes a marathon? Go Lupe!

Brent and I wandered out for dinner, unwittingly, the night before Valentine's Day. What were we thinking? Everywhere was packed and after trying to eat at about five different places we ended up at Buenos Aires Cafe.
When we first walked in we saw what is this quaint lovely little dining room that of course was completely full. With high hopes we went to the host stand and asked to put our name on the list and devastatingly we were told it would be 45 minutes. Normally, that would be fine but seeing as we had spent the last hour or so trying to eat, we were starved. We looked at each other desperately and non-verbally agreed we were just going to eat at subway or something quick. We thanked the young man and said no thank you. We began walking out the door and another young man ran us down and gave us some very, very good news.

Pete's Tacos:Two flour tortillas filled with country sausage, egg, potato, cheese, serranos and onions.
Last weekend we went to Maudie's for one of my favorite breakfast's in town. I like it because it tastes pretty good and it's super cheap! You can get two of Pete's tacos for $3.50 and my migas were only $5.50. The only thing that's a bummer is that the beans are not vegetarian friendly but the migas are more than filling enough on their own. The serranos are fresh and super spicy and it's just a great meal overall.

MIgas con queso (but mine had no queso):Two eggs scrambled Mexican style with tomatoes, onions, serranos and corn tortilla chips.

Another busy busy day! So my morning started off with another fabulous haircut/color by Heather at Salon Sovay. I raved about Heather here and continue to sing her praises to everyone I know in need of a great haircut. I hate to brag, but people have always complimented my hair because I generally do pretty fun stuff with it (when I have the money). But this is the first time that people have complimented AND asked for my stylist's info AND actually gone to her. I can honestly say that none of the four friends that have trusted their locks to Heather's care have been disappointed.

Modern Home Tour 01/30/2010

Picture
Last Saturday Brent and I went on the Austin Modern Homes Tour. It was pretty awesome and I was very impressed with most everything we saw! Fortunately/ unfortunately, due to my raging headache from the night before, I had to go with the old "hair of the dog" remedy and indulge in a free margarita from El Chile on Barton Springs. Along with the grub it way helped in my sickly stomach feeling.
